CHENNAI: The fashion industry has with time, come to be defined by intense competition and a constant demand for overall excellence. It no more stops with just gorgeous looks and enviable figures. It has quickly become a part of popular culture. So, when Pantaloon Femina Miss India South came to town, the response was nothing less than overwhelming.

The excitement of a promising new life was evident in the four contestants selected for the semi final auditions of the beauty pageant. One of the most glitzy events in the fashion calendar, and often considered a stepping stone to a glamorous career in the films, the pageant received 30 registrations to begin with. The number at the end of Day 1 was eight, from which a final of four contestants were shortlisted for the semi finals on November 30. Needless to say, it was a tough job to sift through the rounds for the final four — Kavya Shetty, Apoorva Mitra, Nandita Jaiswal and Shweta Dolli.

To increase participation and extend encouragement to the southern and eastern parts of the country, two exclusive pageants — Pantaloons Femina Miss India South and Pantaloons Femina Miss India East were started a few years ago and have been since held annually. The winner of these regional pageants gets a direct entry to the Pantaloons Femina Miss India (PFMI) pageant.

The final day of the audition in Chennai was judged by the svelte beauty, former Pantaloons Femina Miss India World 2009 Pooja Chopra, who won the Femina Miss India East and went on to win the Pantaloons Femina Miss India World in 2009. “The girls are confident, beautiful and have a clear vision. It is an honour to wear the crown and you end up feeling like a true princess. We hope they make India proud,” said Pooja, as she played the perfect judge.

The four young, ravishing girls will be judged at the semi-final round to be held on December 7, 2010. This will be followed by a rigorous 10-day grooming and training programme, which will prepare them for the D-day — December 22, 2010 — when they compete in the finale of the Pantaloons Femina Miss India South 2011 at the Hyderabad International Conventional Centre in Hyderabad.
