NEW YORK: Dave Grohl has opened up about Kurt Cobain's death, saying the loss of his Nirvana bandmate sent him into a "dark" zone where he could not even bring himself to listen to music.
In an interview with CBS, Grohl, 49, talked about coping with Cobain's death and starting his own band.
Cobain, lead singer of legendary grunge-rock band Nirvana, had committed suicide in 1994.
Grohl, who was the group's drummer, counted Cobain as one of his closest friends.
"I went through a really dark period where I couldn't really even listen to the radio because it broke my heart just to hear music," he said.
"When most people think about Nirvana, they think about a video or a song on the radio, but to me it was a really personal experience with some friends that went from sleeping on floors to then being the number one band on the charts," he added.
The rocker said he was comparatively hidden from the public eye as a drummer, a luxury Cobain did not have."
I could walk in the front door of a Nirvana gig and not really get noticed. So, I didn't have to suffer a lot of the pressures that Kurt did as the frontman."
Grohl slowly began writing and making music again. He created a one-man band, Foo Fighters, and recorded some songs to release an album in 1995. He later, recruited members into the group - currently featuring Nate Mendel, Taylor Hawkins and Chris Shiflett.
William Goldsmith was added in the mix with Mendel before the launch of the debut LP.
"I called it 'Foo Fighters' because I wanted people to think it was a group," he said.
He also said that he was hesitant to share his own songs he had written while playing for Nirvana.
"I didn't like my voice. I didn't think I was a songwriter, and I was in a band with one of the greatest songwriters of our generation. I didn't really want to rock the boat," he added.
Grohl said Cobain's struggles with substance abuse left a lasting impression on him.
"When I tell people I've never done cocaine in my life, they think I'm lying! But I love music, and I love life. And to me, survival is the game and that's the hardest part. I just wanna play music," Grohl said.
