The Little Mermaid will hit the theatres on May 26. Ahead of the release, Oscar-winning Spanish actor Javier Bardem, who stars in the film, spoke about his character King Triton. “I was especially drawn to the relationship he has with his daughter because even though he loves her very much, it’s not always in the best ways. He needs to grow up and face what he fears the most, which is his daughter’s freedom, her independence, and that conflict was very interesting to me.”

Meanwhile, the film’s director Rob Marshall said that the power that Javier has as an actor is massive. “He feels so deeply and expresses emotions with such subtlety and truth. His masterful portrayal of Triton is honestly so moving and dynamic. I loved every second working with him.”

The Little Mermaid features Halle Bailey as the central character, Ariel. Apart from Bardem, the film also features Jonah Hauer-King, Jude Akuwudike, Daveed Diggs, Jacob Tremblay, Awkwafina, Simone Ashley, Noma Dumezwani, Russell Balogh, and Jessica Alexander, among others.

The Little Mermaid will follow the adventure of the titular character, the princess of the sea kingdom, who readies herself to make the greatest sacrifice to become a human and meet the prince in the land. The film’s screenplay is penned by Jane Goldman and David Magee. Alan Menken is the composer. Walt Disney Pictures, Marc Platt Productions, Lucamar Productions, and 5000 Broadway Productions are backing the film.
