We had begun to identify Kunal Roy Kapur as the funny guy with the chubby face (post Delhi Belly, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani) but there has been a volte face. The actor has shed several pounds for his new film, Exit.
The actor talks about his weight loss, his film 3D and a web series that he has lined up this year.
You have lost a considerable amount of weight!
I have lost weight for a thriller called Exit made by first-time director Dhwanil Mehta. We just finished the shooting for this feature film.
Does the film see you doing the song and dance routine?
It has music but I am not dancing to it. There’s no ‘Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani’ this time.
After your weight loss, are you looking to compete with your brother Aditya Roy Kapoor?
No. I am not looking for it but if a lead role comes my way, I will happily take it. However, I am looking for good roles that are challenging. Hopefully I’ll get to learn while playing them. I look for roles that add value to the movie.
Are you going to maintain this weight?
Yeah, I am going to maintain this weight loss; or probably get leaner so that different roles open up for me. I have to stop eating sugar, biscuits and all. You can put on a fat suit to look fat but to look thin you have to be thin. My aim is not to get six pack abs, I just want to be healthy and stay fit and I am enjoying the process.
So what do you have in your kitty?
In 3Dev I am one of three guys besides Karan Singh Grover and Ravi Dubey. It’s a family fun film. I am also doing a web series called ‘Behind The News’ in which I have a small role but I am enjoying it because the content is funny. Life is too short to claim that I have to be the biggest; you just have to be a part of things that are fun.
While shooting for Azhar, were you as lean as you are now?
Yeah! I was pretty much this weight. Throughout Azhar, I am wearing a fat suit. I had already lost 7-8 kilos by the time the director Tony D Souza began shooting. By the next schedule, I had lost 10-12 kilos more so the fat suit became bigger. As the film progressed, they kept increasing the fat suit as I kept reducing.
What role does vanity play in becoming slim?
No. I think an actor has to let go of his vanity. Or he will end up staring at the mirror. Only looking beautiful is not acting; it is modeling. I am not here to look beautiful or handsome, I am here to look like the character and try to convince you that I am that person.
There are rumors that Aditya and Shraddha are dating each other. Comment.
I don’t think they are in any sort of relationship right now. I don’t know Aditya’s romantic status most of the times. I really have no clue.
