Krishna Leela is an unusual offering from director Shashank. The leading pair — Ajai Rao and Mayuri — along with an odd assortment of people make a single incident come to life with pizzazz and wit. The film centres around a phone and a sim card and their significance is carried throughout the film and tied together neatly with the other plot points in the end.
The film is based on a real-life incident and is a youth-centric story. The complex series of events actually begin when Leelavathi aka Leela (Mayuri), a middle-class college going girl wins a mobile phone after winning a rangoli competition. She gets attached to the phone but doesn’t have money to recharge it as her father is very strict and has many rules in place for her. Leela thus follows her friend’s advice and gives missed calls to four to five strangers in order to befriend somebody and convince him or her to recharge the phone on her behalf. Among the four missed calls she makes, only one is returned and that person is Krishna, a school van driver.
Krishna is an ordinary working-class young man who is troubled by the antics of his drunken father, his family’s financial difficulties and a generally hard life. His connection with Leela changes his life. The phone becomes a necessary tool in their daily lives and the two get attached to each other. However, this phone also lands them in a lot of trouble. The tension increases when Krishna lands up at the police station. Here, the police inspector played by Rangayana Raghu gets the two married to each other against Krishna’s wishes.
Will Krishna actually accept his anonymous cell phone buddy as his wife?
Shashank has treated a serious story like Krishna Leela with good humour and entertaining one-liners that will keep the audience involved.
This is filmmaking of a high order that will keep the audience on the edge of the seat. Not only did Ajai Rao as a producer pick up the right film but he has also executed his characters very well. Mayuri steals the show in her portrayal of Leela. Achyuth Rao, Tabla Nani, Rangayana Raghu, Bullet Prakash along with host of other characters give good support. Sridhar V Sambhram’s music captures the different moods while Shekhar’s Chandra’s camerawork enhances the situations. A fun-loving film that also gives a message to the present youth. Krishna Leela forms a good connection with the audience.
