After giving a classic in Amrutha Varshini, director Dinesh Baboo is trying to capture the real with a ‘reel’ twist. Opting for a theme that revolves around relationships, he has found inspiration in a real-life tragedy that made headlines sometime back in Bengaluru.
His film Priyanka is based on a 27-year-old youth who fell in love with a married 34-year-old woman. Unable to bear her shift to another country, the youth kills his love’s husband. Caught and jailed, he proclaims innocence, stating that he killed for love.
“The case is still in court. So, I have taken the initial events and woven a story. The story is profound because of the woman involved and the trauma she goes as the entire society looks down upon her. It is not easy to justify and convince the society, especially for a woman entangled in a complicated relationship,” explains Dinesh.
Dinesh has also looked at the influence of the social media. “We know only a few bits about the incident. Then we did our research involving the police and others, and built a story around it and some instances taken from the social media too,” he says.
Talking about relationships, Dinesh stresses that Priyanka is a family film. “Falling in love is not a crime unless you make it a crime. My film has no evil characters. It is about relationships that, when carried a little too far, become murky,” Dinesh says.
The film features Prakash Raj and Veena Sundaram as strict interrogative officers. Priyanka comes after Ondu Kshanadalli which released over 18 months ago. The audio release of the film will be on October 13.
