Machaan Varghese passes away

The 50-year-old actor who passed away on February 3 was undergoing treatment for prostate cancer for the past 3 months.

KOZHIKODE/KOCHI: Cine Actor Machaan Varghese, hailed as one of the finest comedians in the Malayalam cinema, died at a private hospital here on Thursday. The 50-year-old actor, who entertained the viewers with his unique body language and dialogue rendering, passed away around 4.15 pm.

Machaan Varghese, a native of Elamakkara in Kochi, was admitted to the hospital one month ago. He was shifted to ventilator four days ago after his condition worsened.

Though the doctors attempted a dialysis, the health condition of the actor did not support the process.

Having entered the silver screen from mimicry, Machaan Varghese's performance in 'Thengashipattanam', 'Punjabi House', 'CID Moosa', 'Mannar Mathai Speaking' and over 50 other Malayalam movies will continue to entertain the viewers.He was undergoing treatment for prostate cancer for the past three months.

The body was taken to his residence in Kochi for last rites. Wife Elsi and sons Robichan and Rinchu were present at the time of his death.

Rib-tickling cameos

Machaan Varghese may not be in the league of comedians who played full-length roles in the movies, but he definitely created an impact on the minds of spectators through his comical cameos.

When talking about ML Varghese a.k.a Machan Varghese, the first image that reflects in the moviebuff's minds is the cowherd in the movie 'Thenkashippattanam'. The small role was superbly enacted by Machan Varghese.

His dialogue "Ithenthada, Pashu thalayilu vaalu vecha" to which Dileep responds by pouring the entire bucket of cattle drink over him is one of the best comedy scenes in the movie. Equally funny was the role of lineman Lonappan which he portrayed in 'Meesha Madhavan', who teases Cochin Haneefa's character, calling him 'Pedali'.

Machaan Varghese started his career through Kaboolivala in 1994 and was a regular in Sidhique Lal's movies.

His roles in 'Mannar Mathayi Speaking', 'Hitler', 'Punjabi House', 'Anukudumbam.com', 'Chathikkatha Chanthu', 'Thommanum Makkalum' and 'Kochi Rajavu' were noted for its unique comedy style.

'Best of Luck' directed by MA Nishad was his last released movie. 'Bombay Mittayi', another film that he completed, is yet to hit the screens.
