Drunk driving is an offence. So too, using the cell phone while driving. Violation of these rules can, invariably, lead to some serious accidents. One such accident and the incidents that follow form the narrative of the new Malayalam movie ‘Sandwich’ which is reaching theatres today.

It is the directorial debut of M S Manu, who has been an associate director of Shaji Kailas. He had started off assisting Lenin Rajendran in ‘Mazha’ and is a self-taught film-maker. ‘Sandwich’ is a 100 percent family entertainer, says Manu. “But it does convey some small messages, which are of much importance in the present times. In fact, we have tried to present a serious issue, in a lighter vein,” says Manu. The script is by debutant Ratheesh Sukumaran, who was Manu’s junior in school (Government Model School, Thiruvananthapuram).

The movie has Kunchacko Boban playing the lead. He is an IT engineer working in Technopark. Ananya, Richa (Bhima-ad fame), Minister K B Ganesh Kumar (the first movie since he became Minister), Suraj Venjarammoodu, Lalu Alex, Kottayam Nazeer, Indrans and Shari are part of the cast.  “In this movie, Suraj plays a 55-year-old and is cast as Ananya’s father. He is playing such a character for the first time,” Manu says.

The music of the movie is by Jayan Pisharody (who had earlier composed music for ‘Vasanthamalika’). “A highlight of the movie is that, of the three songs, one is written by a woman – Smitha Pisharody, who is our composer’s wife. You will notcome across many women lyricists in our industry,” Manu adds. The song ‘Panineer chembakam...’ has been written by Smitha. The other two songs are written by Murugan Kattakkada. Art directorection is done by Boban and editing is by Don Max. The film is produced by M C Arun and Sudeep Karat.

The movie releases in Ajanta Theatre.
