Even fifty days after the film’s release, the melodious songs of ‘Ordinary’ remain chartbusters on television. And surprisingly, the man who penned the beautiful lyrics is the one who shelled out the money for the film - Rajeev Nair who produced ‘Ordinary’ under the banner of ‘Magic Moon’.
Rajeev who has penned a total of seven songs for the film says, “It was not an abrupt decision. My prime passion has always been music, which in fact brought me to cinema. Though I am not a singer, music was with me from childhood. I used to write songs, stories and plays. In fact becoming the producer of the movie was the surprising decision.”
Sugeeth, the director of the movie, and Faizal, who cranked the camera, have been close acquaintances of Rajeev. “It was Sugeeth’s adamant decision that both of us should associate with him when he takes a movie,” says Rajeev who stepped into his forte penning a few devotional songs like ‘Makaranilavu’ and ‘Krishnapriyam’.
Vidyasagar was the music director of the movie. Rajeev feels that it was his camaraderie with the veteran music director that instilled confidence in him. He says, “Vidyaji relied on me, that infact gave me the pluck to pen the lines. Writing songs according to the tunes was challenging enough. I wanted to give way for another lyricist if my work does not suit him. But he insisted that I write all the seven songs.”
Rajeev is particularly fond of the melancholic number ‘Suryasalabham...’, sung by K J Yesudas. “I consider it as an honour that the music legend sung that song. The two poems included in the film, ‘Karutha Munthiri...’ and Kanju Poyenteyee...’ rendered by Vidhyadharan Master’, are also close to his heart. But the popular numbers are ‘Sun Sun Sundhari...’ sung by Karthik and Madhu Balakrishnan, ‘Enthinee Mizhi...’ by Karthik and Shreya Ghoshal and ‘Chenthamara...’, a festival song.
“I was not willing to tread the already attempted path. Most of the words that we use are cliched. Therefore I have tried to maintain simplicity and write according to the plotline throughout. It was a strenuous task as ours is not a lyrical language,” says Rajeev for whom more offers are on the way.
