K S Harisankar, grandson of K Omanakutty, is the third generation member from ‘Medayil’ family to enter the music scene

Glimpse through the history of the Malayalam film songs and the name of ‘Medayil’ family is something you just can’t miss. M G Radhakrishnan, M G Sreekumar, Omanakutty and M R Rajakrishnan - members of this prominent music family has been associated with many a hit song in Mollywood. Now making his steady moves towards the industry as a vocalist is K S Harisankar, the grandson of Omanakutty. “This is the blessings of god, my ancestors, family and my gurus,” says Harisankar who already has a handful of films.

It was national-award winning composer Ouseppachan who introduced him to the industry. “He came to know about me through Rajettan (Rajakrishnan) who is the chief sound engineer at Four Frames studio, Chennai. Following his instruction, I sent the tracks I had sung for some of the compositions of Ouseppachan sir. He liked it and I was summoned to Chennai,” says Hari.

He first sang for the movie ‘Karanavar’ to the lyrics penned by ONV Kurup. “Then I got a call from Shan Rehman and it was also an unexpected one. He called after listening to some tracks and that’s how ‘Ormayundo Ee Mukham’ came my way,” says the 20-year old singer.

‘Ormayundo Ee Mukham’ starring Vineeth Sreenivasan in the lead will reach theatres on Friday and Hari is eagerly waiting for the release. “My song ‘Payye payye...’ is getting good response following the audio release and I am happy that it has become popular in FM programmes. Since it’s a situation song, the visuals of this song has not been released,” he says.

Another major release for Harisankar is Mohanlal starrer ‘Laila-O-Laila’. “In that movie I have sung the song ‘Marhaba...’ composed by Gopi Sundar. That too is a solo one,” says Hari. Harisankar is the son of Aleppey Sreekumar, noted musician and professor at Swati Tirunal Music College, and veena artist Kamala Lakshmi. He is a third year BDS student at  PMS College of Dental Science & Research.
