Typically, it is the small and medium budget films in Tamil cinema pay the price for heavy-duty stardom that the industry is so synonymous with. And this December bears a calm with no big players doling out their films, thus making it an ideal release time for these smaller filmmakers.
Atleast six Tamil films are slated for release this month, including Simbhu’s 'Silambattam', which is set for a December 12 release, along with Panchamritham, the first production venture of leading distributor Abirami Ramanathan. Madhavan’s 'Guru En Aalu', which has been pending for release for quite sometime now, is finally hitting the sceens this month.
Abiyum Naanum, which is regarded as a new take on relationships from actor/producer Prakash Raj’s stable, is finally ready for release on December 19, while 'A Aa E Ee', produced by AVM will grace the screens on December 18. Joining this list is director Badri’s 'Ayindham Padai'- the movie is Sundar C’s third movie this year, and is looked upon with high expectations for the hero is turning out to be every commercial filmmaker’s dream hero and is being directed by Badri, who had earlier directed Veerappu with him.
While the season seems fraught with small movies down here, in Bollywood, two of the biggest Khans: Aamir and Shah Rukh, have their releases timed for the Christmas season: Ghajini and 'Rab Ne Bana De Jodi'. The former being the remake of a big hit in Tamil, with chart-topping music by AR Rahman, it is expected that the Chennai opening will be substantial as well.
So, this Margazhi, while those with an ear for music will find kutcheris galore, there will be enough buzz for movie buffs too. And for those who’re equally interested in both art forms, the film 'Margazhi Ragam', a unique concert in movie with Bombay Jayashree and TM Krishna hits the screens on December 18 as well!
