Cosmos Entertainments’ Laadam had a glittering audio launch recently. But later the film was in the news for all the wrong reasons. Caught up in a legal wrangle, the film’s release was about to be delayed. But now, things have been cleared and the movie is set to release on November 20. Expresso spoke to producer JP Kumar of Cosmos Entertainments to find out his side of the story.
Said JP Kumar, “We had taken over the film from Chozha Creations after the first schedule itself. But they claimed that we owed them more dues than the amount paid and went to court. In case of any problems, our agreement stated that the parties should approach the Producer’s Council but they violated this clause. They got an interim injunction against the release. However, we filed an application for vacating the order of interim injunction and it came up for hearing on November 7. The Honourable Judge directed Chozha Creations to obtain No Due Certificates and clearances from the various distributors and associations in Tamil Nadu stating that there were no claims against them. Letters of clearance have also to be obtained from two companies for Satellite TV and overseas exploitation rights.” Kumar explains further, “This also means that they cannot stop the release of the film and it will go ahead as scheduled.”
Director Prabu Solomon explains further, “They claim they shot 50 per cent of the film but had only shot 20 per cent of it when it was taken over by Cosmos.” Kumar is happy that the Producer Council has backed them and will handle any distributor problems if they arise. The film is releasing in Telugu as 16 Days and in Tamil as Laadam, starring Charmi and Aravindan. Lets hope it’s a case of all is well that ends well.
