BANGALORE: Film: Jaajimallige (Kannada) Cast: Ajay, Gowri Munjaal, Nagakiran, Komal, Bullet Prakash, Nagasekhar, Jayamala (guest appearance, Brahmavar Director: R Ananthraju

The film Jaajimallige is a remake of Tamil box office hit Devathai Kanden. Director Anantharaju has followed the original script faithfully, improvising only a little, and it is the script that is the most special. It is different from formula films which end in the ‘happily ever after’ for the lovers.

Actor Ajay’s effort is praiseworthy.

His performance, especially in the climax, deserves appreciation. The climax is different from run of the mill ones. And one can’t afford to miss it. The reason -- it has a message for the youth. It cautions young girls and has a message for boys. As far as Gowri Munjal is concerned, she looks glamorous, but her dancing skills need improvement.

Komal, Nagasekhar and Bullet Prakash provide great comic relief.

Komal’s dialogues and gestures are a treat. Nagakiran’s role is brief. Jayamala, the president of Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, makes a guest appearance as an advocate.

Sadhu Kokila’s music is enjoyable, especially the song ‘Chitte Chitte Bannada Chitte’. MR Seenu has done a neat job behind the camera.

The story revolves around Ramu (Ajay), an orphan. He earns his livelihood by selling tea. He meets Uma (Gowri Munjal), a college student.

Smitten by Uma’s beauty, he falls in love with her. She too reciprocates his love and motivates him towards a better life.

Meanwhile, she falls ill and is admitted to a hospital where Dr Prashanth (Nagakiran) treats her. She comes to know that Prashanth’s father and her father are friends. Their parents want them to get married to each other. Circumstances also compel Uma to follow her parents’ advice. But Ramu approaches the court for justice.

Uma realises her mistake and wants to accept Ramu as her life partner but he rejects her and wants to live alone. Though the pre-intermission session is somewhat stretched, the second-half is interesting.
