Kala

Her first movie as choreographer was 'Puthu Puthu Arthangal' and the song was 'Guru Vaayurappa'. It became a huge hit and Kala never looked back since 1984.

“It’s important to work as an assistant for at least five to six years. If producer asks choreographer to complete a song within two days, he has to do that without compromising on the quality of dance,” says Kala, according to her, each hero has his own style. “I like Hrithik Roshan’s style, which is quite hard,” opines Kala.

“There’re number of choreographers in the industry. If 10 people come, only two of them succeed and establish themselves and the other eight should concentrate on more technical details,” adds Kala.

“In a movie, if there are five songs, each song is choreographed by separate masters and one way it might be healthy but on the other side, there’re chances of overlapping. I saw a movie recently in which two folk songs were choreographed by two different choreographers and the movements were similar more or less”, feels Kala, who has choreographed for more than 1,500 films.

Lawrence

Everyone was impressed with Lawrence’s dancing style in 'Kalam Kalikalam' from Amarkalam movie. 'Parthaen Rasithaen' and 'Parthalae Paravasam' proved his acting ability and from then on he was flooded with movie offers. Lawrence has carved a niche for himself and he tried his luck as director in movies like Muni and Stalin. According to him, actors have their own style and they give their best. “Rather going on the spot and working on the song, it’s better to rehearse two or three days before the shooting,” says Lawrence, who has choreographed for more than 400 films. He hopes Chimbudevan’s 'Irumbukkottai Murattusingam' will give me more scope to dance for western steps.

Kadhal Kandhas

“It’s easy to become choreographer, but the toughest is to become dance director,” says choreographer 'Kadhal Kandhas'. According to him, choreographers are the one who teach dance steps, but dance directors should know all the technical details.

With his hands full of films like 'Arumugam', 'Angaditheru', 'Vedikundu' Murugesan and 'Mala Mala', he says “I’m still learning”. In his five year long career, Kandhas has choreographed for 32 films. “If you take folk and western, there’re different styles and if you follow only hip hop, the song won’t click. A mix of styles is very necessary,” opines Kandhas. “It’s easy to come out with different steps, but concept is what matters. In a concept song, there’s a story and you’ve to keep the audience glued to the screen,” adds Kandhas, who says, an assistant should observe his master’s choreography and must also look into all the minute details.
