Actor-politician SS Chandran no more

The deputy Propaganda Secretary of AIADMK died following a heart attack when he went to Tanjavur to meet party cadres.

TANJAVUR: Popular Tamil cinema comedian and AIADMK Deputy Propaganda Secretary SS Chandran died at Mannargudi near here last night following heart attack. Chandran (69) is survived by wife, daughter and two sons, one of whom, Rohit, is also an actor.

He had gone to Mannargudi to meet party cadre and after returning to the hotel, he had complained of uneasiness and difficulty in breathing, party sources said. He was rushed to a local hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Chandran acted in more than 800 films and started his journey as a performer at the age of 15. He also produced four films.

Chandran, who served as a Rajya Sabha MP from 2001-07, was named as the AIADMK candidate for the Central Chennai constituency in the last year Lok Sabha elections against Union Minister Dayanidhi Maran, but was replaced later on health grounds. He had undergone a heart bypass surgery last year.

His body was brought to Chennai this morning.
