Vijay turns 37, lends voice for organ donation

CHENNAI: Actor Vijay celebrated his 37th birthday in the city by meeting fans and holding a slew of charity events across the city.

The birthday of ‘Ilaya Thalapathi’, as the actor is popularly known, is keenly antipated by his fans, who expect the actor to make an important announcement on the day. It may be recalled that three years ago, the actor announced the conversion of all his fan clubs into a Makkal Iyakkam on his birthday. Two years ago, the actor issued specific instructions asking fans not to celebrate his birthday in a grand manner owing to the ethnic crisis in Sri Lanka.

This year too, the actor issued a statement asking fans to celebrate his birthday by taking to social service and organ donation. On Wednesday, when the actor turned 37, he led by example and pledged to donate his eyes at Balalog Matriculation in Saligramam, where he studied.

He also led a blood donation camp at Shobha wedding hall in the locality, apart from gifting gold rings to new born babies at the Government Maternity Hospital, Kodambakkam. He also kept up his annual birthday ritual of gifting  gold rings to new borns in the Egmore Women and Child Hospital, where he was born.
