Though music director Vidyasagar’s recent hit offerings, Siruthai and Kaavalan had more of mass songs, the musician insists that he wants to stick to his forte — melody.
He has just finished his composition for Karan’s Thambi Vettothi Sundaram, which will be releasing soon.
The music director, who has made a mark for himself in Tamil cinema by composing a considerable number of evergreen super hits, is busy these days composing music for Malayalam films as well.
Says the director, “You cannot say I was absent from the Tamil film industry for long because only last year, I composed music for Siruthai, Maghizchi, Illaignan and Kaavalan. But it’s true that I have been busy with Malayalam films too.”
"Melody is missing in movies today," he complains. “In this fast moving world, people fail to enjoy the small things that are around and that seems to be the case with good music also. Nowadays, one finds the romance factor in music missing. The songs have a lot of percussion and loud jarring music. Of late, there are a lot of gory films that are being released and so a lot of hardcore music is being composed. But not many numbers are remembered,” he says.
Talking about his upcoming film, Thambi Vettothi Sundaram, Vidyasagar says that there are five songs in the film and one of them is a melody number. “Of course, this film has my style of music. I don’t compose a song for the sake of making it a superhit. I compose it for myself.”
Vidyasagar believes in destiny. Even though he has not been around for a while, he has been busy composing music for quite a few Malayalam films.
“In the Malayalam industry, there is some hope. The melody is still not lost. Theirs outlooks are different. They like their music to be subtle and a lot of importance is given to melodious numbers. Yet I’m waiting for greener pastures to come here,” he says.
