

NEW DELHI: 'Byari', the first film in the Beary language spoken in coastal Kannada, and Marathi film 'Deool' won the prestigious Best Feature National Awards on Wednesday. 'Byari' is about how girls in the small Muslim Beary community are mistreated in the name of marriage and divorce. Actress Vidya Balan won the Best Actress award for her stellar performance in the biopic 'The Dirty Picture' based on the life of 80's soft porn actress Silk Smitha.
Actor Girish Kulkarni won the Best Actor award for his role in the Marathi film 'Deool'. The political drama portrays how globalization affects India's small towns. Bollywood scored some hits this year with Onir's controversial film 'I Am' winning Best Hindi Film and Best Lyrics (Amitabh Bhattacharya). 'RA.One' won the award for Best Special Effects.
Director Anjan Dutta's Ranjana 'Ami Aar Ashbona' won the Best Bengali film.
The National Film Awards, which were started as an annual incentive by the Government of India , for the making of artistic, competent and meaningful films have come a long way, to cover the entire national spectrum of Indian Cinema, to judge merit by the highest possible yardstick and to become the most coveted and prestigious award in the country. The award for Best costume went to Neeta Lulla for ‘Bal Gandharva’ (Marathi) and Niharika Khan for ‘The Dirty Picture’ (Hindi).
Gurvinder Singh won Best Director for 'Anhe Ghorey Da Daan'.
