Film- Komban

Director- Muthaiah

Cast- Karthi, Lakshmi Menon, Rajkiran, Thambi Ramaiah, Marimuthu

Komban is set in a rural milieu against the backdrop of a running feud between two rival factions of the same caste, each vying for supremacy. The messiah of one is Komban, a hot-blooded youngster, who never lets a slight or injustice go unchallenged. The whole plot is woven around this larger-than-life protagonist.

And Karthi does full justice to this role. His macho look, the swagger in his walk and his entire body language and demeanour is perfectly tuned to the demands of the character.

However, after a while into the film, this scenario of one unarmed man single-handedly demolishing a dozen armed rowdies becomes predictable and monotonous.

The love interludes between Komban and Palani (Lakshmi) are brief ones, with the duo tying the knot fast enough. The pre-marriage scenario, however, generates some humour. Another interesting angle is the relationship between Komban and his father-in-law Muthaiah (Rajkiran). Komban is antagonistic towards Muthaiah for some presumed wrongs done to him.

But, that angle too is given up, when a character -- in a brief dialogue -- clears Komban’s suspicions, and there his animosity towards his father-in-law thaws.

As in the rest of the film, Komban is moving alone and unarmed, with just his uncle, who is more of a clown, for company, but this Rambo-style scenario is laughable. And like most village plots, this one too climaxes at the village festival. Komban with its violence-filled action scenario, would have been a more satisfactory film, had its emotional angle been explored too.
