COIMBATORE: A case was registered at the Race Course Police here on Saturday against actor T R Silambarasan, and music director Anirudh for indecent representation of women.

The action came after the Coimbatore unit of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), submitted a petition to the city Police Commissioner earlier in the day alleging that Silambarasan, popularly known as Simbu, and Anirudh had recorded a song, which allegedly made some sexist and insulting remarks against women.

The track in question is alleged to have been recorded by Silambarasan and Anirudh, but there has been no confirmation yet. The song, which has found its way into social media, is now popularly called the “Beep Song”, as it has many slangs incorporated into the tune.

Speaking to Express, U Vasuki, national vice president of the AIDWA, said that the song seemed to be a part of a private album that had been uploaded onto YouTube.

“In the recent times, there has been a sharp increase in the number of crimes against women. They are being attacked with acid and being killed by spurned lovers, and such songs are adding fuel to the fire,” the petition stated. The petitioners also said that the songs had been written with the sole intention of insulting women.

Vasuki said the lyrics was “retrogressive and obscene”, and added that it was especially depressing to note that two youngsters had penned and sung the song.

“Patriarchal values are being enforced through a number of ways, and one of the ways is through the media,” she said.

She stopped short of calling for a ban on all songs, which have objectionable lyrics, stating that each incident should be taken on a case by case basis.

Both have been booked under Sections IV, read with VI, of the Indecent Representation of Women Act; 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult modesty of a woman) of the IPC; and 67 (punishment for publishing or obscene material in electronic form) of IT Act.
