Ajith, whose film Vedalam took a grand opening this Diwali, underwent a surgery on Thursday night. Sources close to the actor said the surgery was performed by Dr David Rajan at Kumaran Hospital after Ajith experienced pain.

The source said, “The surgery began at 7.35 pm and ended only at 2.15 am on Friday. The actor was shifted to the ICU immediately after the surgery and is doing fine.”

The actor, who is recuperating, has reportedly been advised bed rest for a period of nine weeks by the doctors. The source said they were expecting him to be discharged from the hospital by the end of the day.

Ajith, who prefers doing his stunts himself without opting for a body double, injured his right knee and shoulder while shooting for one of his earlier films, Aarambam (2013). Sources said that although Ajith recovered, he continued to experience pain occasionally in both these parts. A scan taken by doctors revealed that a surgery was necessary. However, the actor had been postponing it to complete his projects on time.

On the last day of shooting for Vedalam, which is now running successfully in theatres, Ajith injured himself in the same area and was in pain. Doctors advised him surgery and it was shceduled on November 24 but on Thursday, he had to be operated upon, when he couldn’t bear the pain.

The actor has been advised complete bed rest for around three months. Sources said Ajith would not be able to begin work on his next film until next year. “Ajith sir is likely to begin work on his next project again with Siruthai Siva only in the month of June 2016,” disclosed the source.
