Debut Attempt at Humour Goes Awry

Film: MGR Sivaji Rajini Kamal

Director: Robert

Cast: Robert, Suresh, Manoj, Kumki, Ramji, Aishwaria, Nirosha, Vanitha.

Intended to be a  breezy comic film, MGR Sivaji Rajini Kamal is anything but that. It is the debut directorial venture of seasoned dancer-choreographer Robert, with the script penned by actress Vanitha (the film’s co-producer). It’s of a heist and road adventure that goes terribly awry not just for the characters in the film, but for the director and the screenwriter  as well. The screenplay is mediocre, the execution immature and lacklustre and as the narration progresses, it just moves from bad to worse, to a crude, off-colour and a tasteless comedy.

The plot centres on four guys from a low economic background. The quartet, after failing to collect money to ward off a crisis, is on a boozing binge. In an inebriated condition, they hatch a plan. While this may lead one to think that it would be another case of Hangover revisited, thanks to the team, they move on to a different space. The four-some decide to make some fast money. Wearing the masks of four top heroes, they go on a robbing spree, emptying all the ATMs on their way. It soon turns into a messy road adventure with the cop (Aishwaria) at their heels, and another friend, the seemingly effeminate Kannan aka Kannamma (Ramji, is really jarring in his act) entering the scene for a piece of the loot. The whole Ramji-Robert marriage scene is crude and tasteless.  Nirosha, whom the quartet kidnaps, and who later wants a piece of the loot too, is a part of the story. But when the screenplay takes a downslide, it doesn’t help when new characters are introduced. The scene having Powerstar as a church priest, and Premgi’s entry later, adds insult to injury. Poor ‘Thala’ Ajith is not spared either, with a new entrant sporting the actor’s mask later. The film’s low production value is evident throughout. A caption in the opening frame says in a light vein, ‘It is a commercial, light-hearted entertainer. So, when you leave the theatre, please make a positive comment on Facebook, so that the next shows would be houseful.’! Surely, this writer-director team, which is associated with the film industry for a long time, could have done some homework before they ventured into their debut project.
