One of the stills of the film Adida Melam showed Abhinaya of Nadodigal fame tying the mangalsutra around the hero’s neck, triggering speculation if the film was about women’s empowerment.
However, Abhay Krishna, who plays the lead along with Abinaya in the film, says his film is a rom-com and not about women’s empowerment.
“What you say is true. We do have a still like that. However, it has nothing to do with women’s empowerment. It was to show how dominating the heroine’s character is and how lame the hero’s character is,” he explains.
So, what is Adida Melam all about? “It is a hilarious film in which the hero is a wedding planner. He incurs losses because of the heroine, who employs him at one point. The task she assigns him is simple. She wants him to stop her wedding to a guy, who her parents approve, by saying that their horoscopes don’t match.
However, the hero double-crosses her when he gets to know that the bridegroom is willing to offer him more money to ensure that the wedding happens. Later, as the arrangements for the wedding are on, he realises the wicked nature of the bridegroom and decides to stop the wedding with the help of his family members.
How his family comprising his mom and uncle, played by Oorvasi and Mayilsamy, help him stop the wedding is what the film is about.”
So, how did he get the idea for this story?
“We wanted to do a film that would stand out from the rest and not be cliched. We wanted some events to happen and we wanted to shoot it in a nice backdrop. So, we have shot the film in Kodaikanal,” says Abhay Krishna, who is debuting as an actor with Adida Melam.
The film is being directed by Anbu, who is also its cameraman. Music for the film, which the hero says is to release soon, is by Abishek and editing is by Sasikumar.
