First Time in Tamil Cinema: Whole Film Made on Cat

For the first time ever in Tamil cinema, a full-length Tamil feature film has been made on a cat. Titled Meow, the film has been directed by Chinnas Palanisamy, an advertisement filmmaker who claims to have made over 100 ad films.

Talking to City Express, Chinnas Palanisamy said, “We have made a film; the story is based on a cat named Selfie. The entire film revolves around the feline. The idea for this film struck me when producer Vincent Adaikalaraj, who is also the owner of Black Thunder, approached me to make a film that would be unique. We wanted to do something that would stand out and so decided to make a film on a cat.”

But why a cat? “We wanted the experience to be challenging. For instance, we could have used a dog instead of a cat. But then, that would have been easier because dogs can be trained. Cats can’t,” he said.  So, how did they get a cat to act? “We actually bought a cat named Jenny and raised it. There are some things you can’t get a cat to do, so we used computer graphics in those portions,” explained the director.

The film will be a comedy thriller. “There are four songs and two of them are on the cat. In fact, we have featured the cat in a duet. There is another song about the cat, which will be hilarious. The film will appeal to all sections of society,” he said.

The story revolves around four guys and two heroines. “Raja, Sanjay Mickey, Hayden and Kumaravel are the four men; Raja plays the hero, and Gayathri and Shiney are the two heroines. Bojan K Dinesh is the cameraman and music has been scored by Sreejith Edavano,” he explained.

Shooting for the film was over and work on the CG portions was going on. “We require 15-20 days, and the film will be ready for release, which we intend in April,” said Chinnas.
