Heavy rains continue to lash Chennai, disrupting normal life and leading to waterlogging and traffic congestion in the city.

Thunderstorm and lightning is very likely at isolated places over Chengalpattu and Kancheepuramuram districts.

12 flights have been cancelled at Chennai airport due to low passenger turnout. At least 14 flights have been delayed due to heavy rains.

The Regional Meteorological Centre issued fresh Red alert warnings for Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalapattu and Kanchipuram districts for October 16 and 17.

In view of the heavy rain forecast, the State government on Tuesday declared October 16 as a holiday for government offices except for the departments that handle essential services and public sector undertakings, schools and colleges in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chengalpattu districts.

Anticipating the rainfall in the region, residents living around Velachery parked their cars on the Velachery flyover in an attempt to prevent any damage to their vehicles.
