ROYAL MISTAKE: During the making of ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’ in 1998, the 'royal' Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan (right) along with co-actors Salman Khan, Tabu (top), Neelam, and Sonali Bendre (bottom) went on a shooting expedition, killing two blackbucks in Jodhpur's Kankani village. After the protests by the local Bishnoi community, a case was filed against the actors. Salman Khan was also charged with two other poaching cases for the killing of Chinkara deer in Bhawad village and blackbuck in Mathania village in Rajasthan. On November 11, 2016, the Rajasthan High Court acquitted Salman Khan of all charges, saying that there was no evidence to prove that the animals who were found dead were shot by the actor’s licensed gun. INNOCENT BABA: Leading Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt served a five-year jail term due to his involvement in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. He was charged under the stringent Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act or TADA. After being arrested from the airport in 1994, the actor had confessed that mafia don, Abu Salem, had visited his home in January 1993 with Samir Hingora and Hanif Kadawala, proprietors of Magnum Video and alleged close associates of notorious underworld don, Dawood Ibrahim. Dutt had said that they had brought three AK-56 rifles with ammunition, and he had kept one. He claimed that the gun was to protect his family as they had received threats during the Mumbai riots that followed the demolition of Babri mosque in December 1992.   On February 25, 2016, Dutt was finally released from jail.    As per a February 2016 report in the Hindustan Times:  Dutt was convicted to 5 years or 60 months in prison. The number of days he spent in prison from 1993 to 2007: 551 days. The number of days he spent in prison since May 16 2013: 894 days. Police had found more than 10 gm of cocaine, worth around Rs 10 lakh, during the early morning raid. He and a few others were released on bail after spending two months in jail. He was accused of opening fire at film producer B Suresh and an astrologer, Satyanarayana Choudhary at his Jubilee Hills house in Hyderabad, on the night of June 3, 2004. His wife Vasundhara and their driver Kanakaiah were also charged. However, both Suresh and Choudhary during the trial told the court that they were 'not shot at by Balakrishna, but by an unidentified fan standing beside the actor.' Almost all the witnesses, except the actor's gunman and forensic experts, turned hostile in the court, in a highly suspicious turn of events. The three were acquitted of all charges in April 2005. The police later booked him under IPC Sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others). However, according to the actor's application, even the victims “had not made out a case of either criminal negligence or rashness” against him. The 15-day imprisonment handed to him for rash and negligent driving was lifted, and he was released on probation under the Probation of Offenders Act, as the court considered the background of the convict and that he was not involved in any other crime. After being arrested for abetment of suicide on June 10, 2012, Sooraj walked out of the Arthur Road Jail in central Mumbai in July. Granting relief to Sooraj, the Bombay High Court had observed that the 22-year-old aspiring actor can't be held solely responsible for the 'impulsive' act of his actress-girlfriend. 'No doubt it was unfortunate that a young girl has committed suicide. She (Jiah) must have been impulsive and he (Suraj) cannot be held solely responsible for it,' Justice Sadhna Jadhav had observed. After a long judicial process, Salem and Monica were extradited in 2005. While Salem was lodged in a Mumbai jail in connection with the 1993 Mumabi serial bomb blasts case, Monica was brought to Hyderabad for trial in the fake passport case. Monica was charged with acquiring a passport under a fictitious name in 2001 by furnishing a false residential address at Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh. Ankit's brother Ankur was also arrested. According to the police, the victim had invited the singer to a party where he allegedly coerced her into consuming alcohol, and sexually assaulted her. An individual from Thrissur filed a petition that the officials had gone out of the way to favour Mohanlal. It was alleged in the petition that actor and former minister K. B. Ganesh Kumar and forest officials were trying to save Mohanlal. The actor had no license for the same, then. He was later allowed to retain the seized ivories at his home after executing a bond with the authorities concerned.  The Muvattupuzha Vigilance Court ordered a quick verification report against the then state Forests Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan as well as those who had reportedly sold the tusks to the actor. It was quashed by the Kerala High Court in January this year. As of now, the final report is yet to be submitted, and investigation is still not over.
