65th National Film Awards: Sridevi wins Best Actress award, Jayaraj wins Best Director award, Assamese film Village Rockstars is Best Film

The 65th National Film Awards honoured invaluable contributions to Indian cinema for the year 2017 today. The chairpersons of three juries (Feature, Non-feature and Writing) announced the awards in the various categories. Headed by filmmaker Shekar Kapur, the panel included lyricist Mehboob, Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury, Ranjit Das, Rajesh Mapuskar, Tripurari Sharma, Rumi Jaffrey, screenwriter Imtiaz Hussain, South Indian actress Gautami Tadimalla and Kannada director P Sheshadri. Officials said that the awards will be given to the respective winners on May 3.

Late Vinod Khanna has been honoured with the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke Award. The actor is best remembered for his performances in Mere Apne, Mera Gaon Mera Desh , Khoon Pasina among many others. He started his career as a main villain in Mere Apne and later went on to deliver many hit movies. He is one of the few Hindi actors who began by playing villains and moved on to play the hero.

Newton: Amit Masurkar's 'Newton' won the Best Hindi Film honour and actor Pankaj Tripathi, who was part of it, won a Special Mention for his performance at the 65th National Film Awards. Produced by Manish Mundra and starring Rajkummar Rao, the film revolves around a young government clerk, who is sent on election duty to a Maoist-controlled town.
