UNDA: If you loved Raj Kumar Rao's 'Newton', you will love this one too. Inspired by true events, Mammootty plays Sub Inspector Mani of the Kerala police who is in the red-corridor of Bastar with a band of young policemen on election duty. Underequipped and unfit to take on the ruthless ultras, the group pin their hope on the never-arriving 'undas' (bullets) to save their lives. This cop movie is not one with flying cars, close-range fist fights or 'mass' dialogues. We see a middle-aged policeman, who has never fired a shot at anybody or been fired upon, sitting down hopelessly at an emergency juncture, cursing destiny. How often does that happen in Indian cinema? (Photo | YouTube)

AYYAPPANUM KOSHIYUM: Set against the wild majesty of Attappadi, 'AK' tells the story of two clashing alpha male. The duo represents the poles of almost everything including caste, class, family and lifestyle. Privilege becomes a matter of discussion in the movie that is almost three hours long but never fails in keeping one hooked to the screen. A genuine action thriller, this Prithviraj, Biju Menon-starrer comes with some soothing music and BGM that makes it a satisfying experience. (Photo | YouTube)

KUMABALANGI NIGHTS: 'Kumbalangi Nights' was a riot against the established social order that at many times let toxic masculinity flourish. At one hand, we have a home of three hopeless brothers with no women, and in the other, a home of women who have got a male member after a long time. So what happens when love makes these families at two extremes of the Kerala society collide? The movie makes an honest attempt to restore our faith in humanity. The scenic shots of Kumbalangi adds charm to this beautifully crafted movie.(Photo | YouTube)

JALLIKATTU: 'Jallikattu' was one of the much-awaited releases of 2019 as it had won much critical applause at the Toronto International Film Festival and Busan International Film Festival. A buffalo that escapes from a slaughterhouse wreaks havoc in a hilly village, bringing out the beasts in the super-angry humans by nightfall. Starring Antony Varghese, Chemban Vinod Jose and Sabumon Abdusamad in lead roles, the movie is enriched by some haunting background music and camera work.

ISHQ: A young couple sets out to celebrate the girl's birthday only to be harassed and blackmailed for an entire night by two men disguised as policemen. The young man's male ego is hurt when his lover remains mum to his questions about 'what happened' behind the closed door with just her and the man inside. He vows revenge and sets out to track down the man's wife to give him a taste of his own medicine. Ishq's closing scene is one of the finest you are likely to see for a long time and make us rethink about our concept of love. (P.S: This movie 'is not a love story.') (Photo | Facebook)

HELEN: 'Helen' is an Anna Ben movie from start to finish. Survival thrillers are rare to find in Malayalam but this one directed by Mathukutty Xavier has done a decent job. You don't essentially need to be on a mountainous trek like in '127 Hours' or on a lifeboat with a hungry tiger to get your life hanging from a hook. A busy shopping mall in the heart of heavily occupied Kochi can do the same damage, if you are not safe enough. But if it happens, make sure you do it the 'Helen' way. (Photo | YouTube)

ANDROID KUNJAPPAN V 5.25: 2019 was a fine year for Suraj Venjaramoodu. This movie narrates the stroy of a rare man-machine relationship. The movie revolvesg around an old man with an estranged relationship with his son and their attempts to bond with a humanoid robot brought in to do household chores. Fun ,yet touchy.

PORINJU MARIAM JOSE: Old wine in new bottle of course, but worth a try since it is about spending time as none of the lead actors nor the action scenes disappoint. For fresh admirers of Malayalam cinema, PMJ is a two and a hour-hour long tour to the yesteryears of the industry - late 80s to early 2000s to be exact. For Keralites, this movie is a nostalgic revisit to a fast disappearing era of Malayalam cinema. You can try the game of 'predict the next scene' while watching this one. (Photo | Facebook)

VIRUS: Last, but not the least. You don't get to watch a decent medical thriller every day. Based on the 2018 Nipah virus outbreak in Kerala's Kozhikode district, this Aashiq Abu movie will give you a chill or two. The movie narrates how the government machinery functioned during one of the darkest times of modern Kerala - trying to contain the deadly outbreak as soon as possible along with managing the panicking people. However, the emotional elements attached to illness and death are not excluded in the process. If not now, suggest a better time to watch one!(Photo | YouTube)
