Happy Birthday Madras: Here are nine iconic landmarks in Namma Chennai

Madras Day is celebrated on August 22 every year. This whole idea was conceptualized in 2004 during a meeting of Chennai Heritage foundation when a Chennai-based Journalist Vincent D'souza suggested this to historian S. Muthiah.

Named after William Dare, this building was constructed way back in late 1930’s. The area surrounding Dare building is popularly known as Parry’s corner. Interestingly, William Dare was one of the partners at Parry & Co. Also the building is built with Art deco style of architecture as most of the buildings in George Town adopted Art deco style from 1930’s. The building now houses headquarters of Murugappa group. Tamil Nadu government named it “Vivekanandar Illam” in the year 1963, the centenary year of Swami Vivekananda.It is said that Swami Vivekananda stayed here for nine days when he came back from the west.
