Gambhir first came into headlines when he scored two successive first-class double-hundreds in 2002, with one of them coming against the Zimbabwe Team, which visited India that year for two Tests and five ODIs. He made his ODI debut against Bangladesh in TVS cup tri-series 2003. In his third match, he scored 71 against Bangladesh and became the Man of the Match. His maiden ODI century (103 off 97 balls) came against Sri Lanka at Ahmadabad in 2005. In 2004, he made his Test debut against Australia in the fourth Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Mumbai, where he scored 3 and 1 in both the innings.
