Music teacher  in your pocket

A vocal learning and singing app that promises to give you feedback about your pitch and rhythm

HYDERABAD : Did you ever feel that you don’t have the ‘natural talent’ or you are not ‘naturally gifted’ to sing, but you belted out when you are alone because you just can’t resist your love for singing? Did you ever decide to give a shot in learning the art of singing but the aspiration being overridden by your day job, never materialised?

‘Learn to Sing: true music’ might hold the key to your impediment. Firstly, Learn to Sing: true school is a singing app which is available online and is created by the famed True School of Music (TSM), Mumbai. Claiming to be a ‘teacher in your pocket’ this app provides real time detailed feedback of your pitch and rhythm while singing after a teacher.

Based on the curriculum of your song choice, you will sing exercises to practice singing like in a formal schooling environment. The exercises will be based on scales, intervals, rhythms etc.  Once you are ready to perform a complete song without the help of app, you can submit your performance to TSM through the App and receive detailed feedback from faculty. The personalised feedback will be emailed to you, with accurate reference to the various sections of the song, highlighting your strengths and areas of improvement.

The app which is currently in its beta version has two school: English and Hindi, but TSM team have the intention of going local. “The plan is to go regional, go to different states and get localised  so that the user has chances of promoting their own music,” says Ashutosh Phatak, co-founder of the app.  With  180,000 downloads in nine months since its existence, the final version of the app is expected to release in July and have more schools in addition to the existing English and India, as the TSM team aspires to be more inclusive.

It will also feature progressive learning of music theory, ear training and sight singing of music notation in addition to expanded collection of vocals exercises. Music composers and producers Salim-Suleiman and Ankur Tewari are also a part of Learn to Sing. There will be several noted collaborations on the app encouraging users and creating platforms where they may not only train but, also, showcase their skills to the best and biggest in the industry, the app founder says.   The team will aim for 1 million users by the end of the year once the final version is released. But To achieve that, they are left with a daunting task of finding what users need. “This is not a karaoke app, it is a teacher teaching you how to sing,” he adds.
