Can you lose 125 kg after surgery and stay safe?

HYDERABAD:Md. Samiuddin Sajid (57) suffering from several obesity related diseases including arthritis, breathlessness, and fatty liver, weighed 210 kgs. That’s when he decided to undergo a bariatric surgery and get his life back on track. This was two years back. Today, he weighs 85 kg and has  never felt more healthy and energetic.

Talking about the surgery, Dr B Narsaiah at Star Hospital, Banjara Hills, says that bariatric surgery is not undertaken for cosmetic purposes. Rather, it is one of the best options available to reduce obesity. “This is a hormonal operation. It reduces a hormone called Leptin in our bodies because of which metabolism increases. This also increases the chances of pregnancy in women because it increases ovulation,” he said. Samiuddin boasts that he never had to work out or indulge in any exercise post-surgery, and that today, he can consume any kind of food. “I didn’t feel any pain after the operation and was discharged within five days. I was on a liquid diet then, but now I can eat everything.

I am so happy now, I have no problem while walking or going about my day,” he said. Claiming that bariatric surgery is one of the best ways to combat obesity, Dr Narsaiah said that while there is only 0.01% of risk involved in the surgery, it is 80% more safe than a normal delivery and the fact that it only costs `2-4 lacs makes it a viable option for the general masses.
