NEW DELHI: The Centre on Monday announced that there would be no Class X board exams in CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) schools from 2011 and grades will replace marks.
Union Minister for Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal said that Class X students of CBSE schools will have to give board exams in 2010 but they will get grades. Sibal said, “Children moving to Class X1 from Class X in 2011 shall have no board exam. But those moving in 2010 will have a board exam. After the Board examination is abolished in 2011 students will have a choice to take the board exam on demand for transfer (to another school) or entry into pre-university institutes”.
From 2011, the evaluation of the students will be based exclusively on a grading system which will be introduced this year. Kapil Sibal said, “This is good system which will very well judge the potential of a student.” A grading system with A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2, D, E1 and E2 grades would be introduced in 2011. The new grading system will have a nine-point scale -- A1 (91-100 exceptional), A2 (81-90 excellent), B1 ( 71-80 very good), B2 (61-70 good), C1 (51-60 fair), C2 (41-50 average), D (33-40 below average), E1 (21-32 needs improvement) and E2 (00-20 unsatisfactory).
Only students who secure more than 33 percent marks will get a pass certificate. The grading procedure was finalised by a high-level committee headed by CBSE chairman Veenith Joshi.
Kapil Sibal had last month announced that the government would do away with the Class 10 Board exams and make it optional from this academic year. However, on Monday he said that government doesn’t want to burden the students with something new in the middle of the academic session.
