NEW DELHI: Another indication that the Left parties and its allies are keen to not let go of coming session of Parliament without cornering the government on issues other the spectrum scam, came from none other CPM general secretary Prakash Karat.
Taking part in a dharna at Jantar Mantar Karat said, “The issue of price rise and corruption will be take up by us in full force. That price rise is getting precedence over corruption issue was evident in the Left leader’s anti-government policy diatribe on Tuesday.
“The Prime Minister had said that prices will be reined in by October 2009. He then said prices will come down by December. It did not happen. Now the Prime Minister is saying that prices will down by this March,” Karat said, ridiculing the government shifting stand.
Pushing the traditional Left line, Karat suggested that the government should immediately act to firm up the public distribution system, bring in land reform and provide more employment to people.
The Centre and the state government have been passing the buck to each other on who’s responsible for the rising prices. This includes the two Left-ruled states which are going to polls-Kerala and West Bengal. But the Left leaders pointed out that from Karnataka to Orissa, the response to their protest marches have been massive and unprecedented. Pointing to the stress that the common man is in, the CPI general secretary A B Bardhan said that the government has taken steps that have fuelled inflation instead of bringing it down. He ridiculed the Congress which raised aam admi slogans to get the votes and then failed the same aam admi miserably.
