NEW DELHI: In a big boost to its indigenous missile development capacity, India is setting up a solid propellant rocket motor manufacturing facility in Nasik, Maharashtra.
The facility would be a shot in the arm for India, which started its Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP) in 1983 to build indigenous missile building capability in the face of the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR). Rocket motor technology was also denied to the nation under the MTCR regime.
“So far, we have been making the rocket motors manually for missiles. But this is for the first time, we are establishing a dedicated facility to make solid propellant-based rocket motors in Nasik,” an official of the premier research organisation, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), told Express.
To be named Advance Centre for High Energy Materials, the facility would have a capability to process 100 tonnes of solid fuel.
