NEW DELHI: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has closed a case pertaining to collapse of weak buildings that have become a headache for most of the Delhi citizens.
After seeing media reports and on a petition filed by Supreme Court advocate and rights activist Radhakanta Tripathy, the NHRC had issued notice to the Chief Secretary, Delhi, and the MCD Commissioner over collapse of a building in Lalita Park, Laxmi Nagar, wherein 67 people died on November 18 last year.
In its response to the notice, the Delhi Government and the MCD replied that six engineers were suspended on receipt of the complaint from the Central Information Commissioner with regard to the unauthorised constructions.
However, they were reinstated later on. Meanwhile, the government had paid ex gratia of `2 lakh for the death of adult members, `1 lakh for death of a child, `50,000 for serious injury and additional `1 lakh to orphaned children.
In the meantime, the Lt Governor of Delhi also appointed a commission to probe the the issue. Many incidents of similar nature have occurred in New Delhi. Four persons were killed when a four-storey building collapsed in West Delhi on Wednesday near Uttam Nagar metro station.
