Mafia don-turned-politician D P  Yadav, who was refused entry to the Samajwadi Party in the 2012 Assembly elections, got his revenge when the party’s attempts to dislodge his kin from a zila panchayat chairman post failed.

The SP moved a no-confidence motion against  Poonam Yadav, chairperson of zila panchayat of Badaun district, who is also D P Yadav’s relative.

Before the 2012 Assembly elections Akhilesh Yadav as state president of the SP had refused entry to D P Yadav, saying that he was against the presence of criminal elements in the party. But D P Yadav had the last laugh when the party’s plans to dislodge Poonam turned unsuccessful. D P Yadav, who himself is a local MLA, led a counter strategy against the operation supervised by Chief Minister Akhilesh and his brother Dharmendra Yadav, MP from Badaun .

Chetana Singh Yadav was the SP’s candidate against Poonam. On Friday, amidst heavy security, 31 out of 41 members of the panchayat turned up for voting . A few women members tried to enter the hall for voting when Poonam raised his doubts over their identity and they were found to be fake voters. The exposure of fake voters and low voter turn-out cleared the way for Poonam.

The humiliating defeat of the SP in its stronghold Badaun has sounded alarm bells for Dharmendra for his re-election in the 2014 elections. “It is a victory of justice” remarked a content D P Yadav to Express.

In the defeat, SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav’s trusted man and district president Banwari Singh Yadav has been dubbed as a black sheep. Chetana Singh has blamed Banwari for her defeat and his total surrender to D P Yadav.

The defeat is a big blow for the CM and Dharmendra Yadav and and will raise the apprehensions of Mulayam Singh, who is already reported to have doubted  his son’s poor management.
