The UPA Government may call a special session of Parliament in July to pass two key Bills, including the Food Security Bill. A final decision will be taken after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s return from his foreign tour on Friday.

Though no dates have been finalised, the session could take place in the first week of July. Sources said Finance Minister P Chidambaram, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath and Food Minister K V Thomas were in favour of holding a special session of Parliament considering the Opposition demand for detailed discussion on the Food Bill.

Reports said the idea of a special Parliament session might be in view of the fact that an ordinance was not a good option because legal right could not be given to beneficiaries through an executive order without Parliament nod.

Sonia Gandhi last week had appealed to the Opposition to come together and help the government pass the two bills
