GUWAHATI: United National Liberation Front of West South Asia (UNLFW), the nascent North East rebels forum, on Monday released pictures of the rifles it had seized from Assam Rifles personnel in Nagaland. Seven Assam Rifles personnel and another belonging to the Naga Territorial Army were killed while five others were seriously injured in an ambush by UNLFW insurgents at Changlangsu in Assam’s Mon district on May 3.
UNLFW is an umbrella body of the four North East extremist groups -- National Socialist Council of Nagaland (SS Khaplang faction), the United Liberation Front of Assam (Paresh Baruah faction), the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (anti-talks) and the Kamatapur Liberation Organisation. Meanwhile, according to some reports, massive troop deployments by Assam Rifles was under way in some parts of the state in the wake of a series of subversive activities carried out by the Khaplang faction of the NSCN.
The outfit went back to its old ways after unilaterally breaching its 14-year-old ceasefire with the Centre in March. “There has been a massive deployment of the personnel, especially in areas where the Khaplang faction of the NSCN is very active,” defence sources told Express. The sources also said a strong public mood was building up against the rebels following the violent incidents.
