MUMBAI: In a shocking incident, a 28-year-old woman was gang-raped by eight men while she was out house hunting with her husband in Amboli area in the western Mumbai suburb of Jogeshwari on Monday night. The incident took place in the Shamnagar slum area of Amboli and was reported to police around 11 pm, said police sources.


The woman had been out looking for a house to rent with her husband the entire day with the help of another woman from Shamnagar. Since it became late, the couple chose to stay at the house of the woman who accompanied them. The eight accused, who are from the same area, raped the victim there.


The victim was being stalked by the accused persons for the past few days. They dragged her husband out of the house and took turns to rape her, police said. One of the accused has criminal antecedents.


All the accused were arrested  on Tuesday morning and remanded in police custody until Friday. The victim, who was admitted in a hospital, is stable and was discharged after undergoing treatment. 


The accused individuals have been identified as Nastain Zafar Ali Shaikh alias Babu (19), Nagesh Dhangar alias ‘Kateri’ (21), Imran Muhammad Hussain Shaikh (23), Muhammad Ghulam Hussain Khan (27), Rakesh Khaire (21), Zaheer Sharif Khan (23), Ejaz Ahmed Shaikh (21) and Pradeep Ghagat (23). 
They have been booked under various stringent sections of the Indian Penal Code.
