KOZHIKODE: Fidel Castro and Che Guevara have inspired generations in Kerala, particularly those who have Communist leanings. But Che is the more celebrated revolutionary leader in Kozhikode and Kannur among the members of the Students Federation of India (SFI) or the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI). They have a reason too.
“Che Guevara is a martyr. He died fighting for the poor people. He enjoys more popularity than Fidel Castro. Che’s revolutionary ideas and activities have inspired many world leaders and comrades see him as a real hero. There are many arts and sports clubs in the district which organise various functions to commemorate Che,” said CPM Kannur district secretary P Jayarajan.
In Kannur, youngsters regularly wear T-shirts with Che’s picture embossed on them and flex boards featuring Che’s face can be seen in many parts of the district.
“Che enjoys more popularity among the youths and Fidel is more popular among elder people. People admire Fidel as a powerful socialist ruler. Their revolutionary activities and standoff with the capitalists have always inspired the Left followers across the world,” said Manoj Kumar, a Kannur-based CPM activist.
Che’s decision to stay away from power too has earned him several followers.
“When Castro came to power, Che stayed away from becoming a part of the government and continued revolutionary activities until his death. He was not bothered about power or position. It was this quality of him that influenced the Communists especially youth,” said Kozhikode CPM district committee member K T Kunhikannan. “In fact, love for Che inspired many to support the Left in the state,” said another Communist activist.
But Castro has not been forgotten. Comrades have put up posters and flex boards at various places to commemorate him.
