ALAPPUZHA: Boring, conventional classrooms could soon be history. The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) is all set to revamp the primary education sector in the state.
The entire schooling in the primary section will be revamped integrating the curriculum with art, dance, music and theatre.

P Prasad, director SCERT, said 40 teachers from the state were given training with the assistance of the National Council of Education Research and Training. Manakkala Gopalakrishnan, research officer SCERT, said the conventional style of teaching was frustrating children. “The teaching integrated with art will keep the children more interested” Gopalakrishnan said.

“The system was introduced by the NCERT in municipal schools in New Delhi a few years ago and found effective. It attracted more students to schools as the classrooms were converted into art rooms. All subjects, including mathematics, can be conducted artistically,” he said.

“This system very effective and we have started popularising it in the country. Many states have already started teaching this method. The training to teachers are imparted in Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, Bihar, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh,” said Pawan Sudheer, director NCERT.

Rajendra Kumar Khajuria, research officer, SCERT Jammu and Kashmir, who trained resource persons in Kerala, told ‘Express that the attendance of schools was 50 to 60 percent and after the introduction of the system in 2014, the attendance increased by 20 per cent. Vijayakumar, a resourceperson from Kerala, said the new method should open a fresh path.
