THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:The City Police have initiated procedures to register criminal cases against the founders and admins of the Facebook group ‘Glassile Nurayum Platile Curryum’ (GNPC) on charges including creating provocation with intend to cause riot. The decision was taken on the basis of a report filed by Narcotic Cell Assistant Commissioner Sheen Tharayil under the instruction of City Police Commissioner P Prakash.

Commissioner told Express Nemom Station House Officer has been told to register cases against founder-admin Ajith Kumar and his wife Vinitha who reside at Karakkamandapam. Certain posts which pretzeled a spiritual leader’s quote and a picture  which showed alcohol being consumed at a cemetery led to the duo being charged with a criminal case. Those who posted the pictures will also be booked, police said.

Meanwhile, the group admins and those who posted pictures of alcohol consumption in the presence of children will be booked under Juvenile Justice Act. GNPC, a Facebook group that flaunts a member strength of 18 lakh, waded into controversy after the Excise Department took action against it alleging the posts in it were promoting alcoholism.

A raid was also conducted at the couples residence and the Excise Department claimed they recovered DJ party tickets conducted by the group admins where drinks were also served. Though they registered a case under Abkari Act, the baton was passed on to the police to decide whether any criminal charge could be levelled against the couple as well as other admins.
