KOCHI: The agitation by students of Albertian Institute of Science and Technology (AISAT), Kalamassery, was called off on Tuesday, after the college authorities assured to form a special committee to look into the demands raised in the memorandum submitted by the students.
The strike was launched, with support of the SFI, against the ‘unreasonably’ strict disciplinary rules set by the management - such as curbs on growing hair and beard and hefty fine for not wearing uniform.
“The college is just like a military camp. Faculties assigned by the management would monitor students at the entry point of every block. They will check everything, except the underwear,” said an agitating student.
When the strike entered the second day on Tuesday, initially the college management was reluctant to budge and maintained they would not hold talks with student organisations.
The management changed the stand when students’ representatives and district leaders of the SFI pressed for talks. The college authorities had reportedly summoned parents of the students who signed the memorandum.
“At the conciliation meeting, we were assured that demands raised in the memorandum would be looked into and a special committee would be formed, with students’ representatives and teachers as members,” said SFI area committee secretary Balu.
