KOCHI: Aysha Haseen is a humorist at her best. When she is not drawing cartoons, she paints on an acrylic canvas. The artist who is in Kochi for her first solo exhibition at Nanappa Art Gallery titled ‘SoloToons’ says it was her passion that brought her thus far.
The political cartoonist, who is proving herself in the male-dominated field, is unafraid to poke fun at several world leaders.
Her journey “Cartoon has always fascinated me since childhood. It was my mother who discovered my interest towards art,” she said. “I’m not biased in any manner. However, I make it a point to be up-to-date. This is a cartoonist’s strength. I read newspapers and translate those events into my work of art,” she says.
“This has taught me that art is truly a way of exploring and expressing ones views without any boundaries. And I am trying my level best to bring about a change, by emerging as an example for other women cartoonists,” adds Aysha Haseen.
The Mahe native has faced severe criticism from her community. “Even during these times, it was my mother who encouraged me. She was the one who stood by me and gave the guidance for me to blossom into a good artist,” says Aysha Haseen.
The Dubai-based art teacher of Sharjah Indian High School says her husband has also been supportive of her creative side. My entire family has always inspired me to do more which is why I have attained a position as a cartoonist today, she says.
