Traditionally, nothing looks better in summer than white garments with clean, crisp lines and ethereal, flowing silhouettes. White pants, shorts, shirts, dresses, bags, sandals–you see them everywhere and on everyone, and they look great. There’s only one white trend that most women are hesitant to embrace, and that’s the white swimsuit. Probably owing to fears of being the subject of a sheer alert.

But ever since the world saw photographs of Kate Middleton and her sister Pippa frolicking in a boat off the coast of Ibiza, in sizzling, white-hot two-pieces, white swimwear has got a new lease of life. Even for those who bear no resemblance to Adriana Lima, the Brazilian model who is known for making magic with a blend of white swimwear and Victoria’s Secret.

The attraction is easy to understand: a white swimsuit looks good on all skin tones, especially the Indian one. In fact, nothing shows off a golden tan better more than an ivory suit. Those who want to accentuate the contrast can rub in an all-over body bronzer or a shimmering lotion.

But to ensure that the old fears are put to rest at the bottom of the sea, white swimsuit wearers need to ensure that the piece is not made of see-through fabric. And to check that it’s lined properly and doesn’t turn sheer when wet. Opting for ample coverage at the bottom might seem stodgy at the shop; but you’re better safe than sorry. Designers say the style doesn’t matter: the colour (or lack of it, thereof) is enough to turn up the wattage. The point is to be comfortable and have the piece fit well, in all the right places. But yes, as with all other swimwear, a bandeau top looks best on the small-busted while tankinis can disguise a dodgy midriff.

Of course, the last rule doesn’t apply if you’re pregnant–or famous. Singers Alanis Morisette and Alicia Keys both traipsed around quite happily in white bikinis when they were with baby. If you don’t have that excuse, remember to check into the gym for a killer routine that tames your abs and butt before you buy the white piece. And yes, do pencil in an appointment with your Brazilian wax lady as well.
