Feng Shui is not just about placing bamboos and Laughing Buddhas around the house or office. It is a subtle art that ensures that the chi —or the life force—flows harmoniously through all living spaces. Of these, aquariums play an important role. Apart from their aesthetic appeal and the soothing feeling of watching fish swim lazily around, ancient feng shui practitioners believe that they have the power to bring prosperity and good luck into your space. Aquariums are believed to be a wealth chi. Water symbolises the flow of life, of growth and the activities of living things. The motion and sounds of the water as it moves all along the aquarium because of the motion of the fish activate and increase the positive energy of the room in which it is kept, bringing good fortune, wealth and abundance.

Feng Shui aquariums are tanks made specifically according to the principles of chi. They balance all the five elements:

1. The water element.

2. The wood element: Represented by the plants inside the aquarium.

3. The metal element: The round shape of the Feng Shui aquarium symbolises metal. Placing copper coins below the material that forms the base within the water tank also represents the metal element. Another way is to add gold-coloured fish such as golden arowana or goldfish. Dragon carp symbolises high ambition and success, and represents immense wealth. Flower horn fish are lucky for love and happiness.

4. The earth element: The gravel and the rocks inside the aquarium.

5. The fire element: Lighting and also fiery coloured fish.

Before placing the Feng Shui aquarium, consult your Feng Shui chart to determine which corner lacks water energy. The best location for it is the south-east part of your house since wealth and abundance are usually connected with this area. Before  you buy the aquarium, ensure that the corner is positive for you.

Warning: Never place the Feng Shui aquarium in the kitchen or the bedroom.

Fish: Goldfish are recommended as the best fish to be reared in your aquarium.  They symbolise wealth. Another kind of fish that brings the same results as goldfish are dragonfish, but they are a much more expensive option. Your aquarium should have at least one black-coloured fish. That fish bring luck by themselves is a superstition that arises out of an incomplete understanding of Feng Shui. The movement of water caused by the fish swimming within the aquarium activates positive energy bringing good luck. Feng Shui can be combined with numerology to boost the power of the aquarium. Put in nine fish in the tank. Eight of these should be goldfish and the ninth should be black in colour. Gold beings good luck, and the blackfish acts as a deterrent to misfortune. Timely maintenance of the Feng Shui aquarium is extremely important. Keep it clean. Remove dead plants.
