

The festival aims to bring some of the most renowned names in the country’s music scene under a single banner
Starting this October 30, this year’s Margazhi season begins a month earlier with Bharat Sangeet Utsav, 2008.
Carnatica Archival Centre for Music and Dance joins hands with one of the city’s oldest sabhas, the Parthasarathy Swami Sabha, to bring some of the most renowned names in the country’s music scene under a single banner.
Ramanathan N Iyer, director, Carnatica, said on Tuesday that at the utsav, the culture capital of India would be treated to performances in classical music, dance, harikatha and sangeeta upanyasam by the field’s who’s who.
Also on the cards are special performances of doyens like Nedunuri Krishnamoorthy.
Speaking at a press conference, he also announced that they have lined up a special jugalbandhi concert to mark the 80th birthday of the great violinist, TN Krishnan, who would be performing alongside his sister Dr N Rajam.
“We’re trying to create and magnify the brand of each artist who will be performing at this year’s Bharat Sangeet Utsav”, said KN Shashikiran, cofounder of Carnatica. In addition to providing a platform for the young, upcoming talents in the field, Carnatica has decided to include an awards ceremony to pay tribute to the country’s music connoisseurs, on a level that will be as grand as a Filmfare awards ceremony, he added.
On this note, the Lifetime Achievenment Award has been unanimously decided to be conferred upon the violin maestro, Lalgudi G Jayaraman. The utsav also features distinguished Hindustani musicans such as Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and Ashwini Bhide Deshpande (who will be performing abhangs), along with celebrated musicians like TN Seshagopalan, TV Sankaranarayanan, Vijay Siva, Sudha Raghunathan and S Sowmya.
Slated to be held at the Narada Gana Sabha this music festival will also have a special dance medley performed by danseuse, Anita Ratnam.
Secretary of Parthasarathy Swami Sabha, M Krishnamurthy said that the sabha was happy to be a part of this celebration of the pan-Indian cultural music.
