Chennai Triple Murder

It is five years since S Saravanan, former MD of Tamil Nadu Minerals Corporation, his wife Kasturi and maid Anbarasi were found murdered in their house in upmarket Ashok Nagar. In 2010, Chennai Police arrested four persons, including a cab driver and a woman for committing the murders to loot valuables. Though a fast track court convicted all four, hearing an appeal, the Madras High Court picked several loopholes in the police theory and lambasted it for shoddy investigation. The High Court then ordered a CBI enquiry.

Lake Death

Sathish Kumar (24), son of advocate Sankara Subbu, was fished out dead from the ICF Lake at Perambur on June 13, 2011, seven days after he went missing and his father filed a habeas corpus plea in Madras High Court. Since Subbu suspected his son was murdered by a few police officers, the probe was transferred to the CBI after autopsy indicated marks of torture on the body. Even though the probe was monitored by the High Court, there seemed to be little headway. After one-and-a-half years, the CBI said Sathish committed suicide. Unsatisfied, the Court constituted a SIT.

Body in a Drawer

On July 20, 2007, Thane resident Snehal Gaware was at home, recovering from a leg injury, when her friends including boyfriend Hiren Rathod called upon her. In the evening when her mother returned home, she could not find Snehal. The girl’s cell phone was switched off. The parents then filed a missing complaint. The next morning, her mother discovered Snehal’s body with her mouth gagged, and hands and legs tied in the drawer of her bed. She had been strangled. Her phone was traced to Mumbai. The dealer described the person who sold the phone to him and Rathod was apprehended. In 2011, he was discharged due to absence of evidence.
