ENEMY WITHIN
All it took was a call from Prime Minister Morarji Desai to Pakistan President Zia ul-Haq in 1978. Desai told Zia that India knew about Pakistan’s nuclear weapons programme. The immediate fallout was Zia leaving no stone unturned to neutralise RAW assets in Pakistan. RAISING LTTE
RAW trained and armed LTTE guerrillas to keep the Sri Lankan government in check. Later, the monster came back to haunt the Indian peacekeeping force. Hundreds of soldiers were brutally killed in Operation Pawan, targeting Jaffna University campus.
IC-814 HIJACKING
Days before the hijacking of IC-814 by Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists, a junior RAW operative got wind of the plot and informed his superior in Kathmandu. He was scolded and the information was never relayed to RAW headquarters. Interestingly, the RAW officer who refused to accept the alert was travelling in the same flight and remained captive along with others at Kandahar.
KARGIL WAR
RAW successfully intercepted a telephone call of Pakistan Army Chief Pervez Musharraf, who was in Beijing to his Chief of Staff Mohammed Aziz in Islamabad. The analysis of the tape was forwarded to the political establishment. But when the 10-week conflict broke, RAW was blamed for not generating prior intelligence.
MOLE’S ESCAPE
On May 7, 2004, Rajpal Prasad Sharma and Deepa Kumar Sharma boarded a flight from Kathmandu to Vienna. Intelligence agencies had no clue that Rajpal was actually Rabinder Singh, senior RAW officer-turned-CIA mole who was trying to escape to the US after RAW came to know
about his anti-India activities. Singh mysteriously disappeared from his official residence with the active support of CIA operatives in India and Nepal. The couple later filed an application for asylum in the US.

The external spy agency had no clue about the terror plot to attack the economic capital of India through the sea route. After the spies were caught napping, the agency “leaked” reports stating states were warned about terror attacks in September and November. The report triggered massive controversy and the government was forced to deny any such input.
